BackFocus is a podcast exploring space and astronomy: the night sky, the gear, the science, and the people who look up. Each episode we dig into what is happening overhead, talk to people doing remarkable things in the hobby and the field, and point listeners toward communities where they can connect. The name is a nod to the focus point behind the lens -- the place where the light finally comes together. That is what we want this show to be for the astronomy community.

Eric
Host & Founder
Eric is a lifelong technology enthusiast, astrophotographer, and amateur astronomer whose passion lies in making astronomy more accessible and bringing people together through a shared appreciation of the night sky. A member of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society, he enjoys everything from visual observing and deep-sky astrophotography to discussing telescopes, imaging techniques, and the latest developments in amateur astronomy. With a background in information technology and cybersecurity, Eric approaches astronomy with both curiosity and a love of problem-solving, always eager to learn, experiment, and help others discover the universe.
As the host of BackFocus, Eric's goal is to highlight the people who make amateur astronomy such a welcoming and inspiring community. Through conversations with astronomy clubs, observatories, educators, astrophotographers, telescope makers, and enthusiasts, he hopes to strengthen connections across the hobby, promote outreach and public events, and encourage more people to look up. Whether you're a seasoned astronomer or someone seeing Saturn's rings for the first time, Eric believes the night sky has something to inspire everyone.

My name is Rowan. I was born in the dead center of the Midwest. My first exposure to astrophotography was when I was a kid. My uncle worked on the railroad and had access to the abandoned train car depot which, luckily, had almost zero light pollution, opening us up to class 1 skies.
I'll never forget the kind of wonder that filled me with. Looking up at a vast sky, filled with all kinds of celestial bodies, and just how beautiful they are. These days, I spend my days working as an announcer for live radio, and my nights miles out of town looking for a good shot!
